Something remarkable has been happening in England. From industrial estates to quiet countryside stillhouses, a new generation of distillers has been reshaping the whisky landscape — and the results have been turning heads around the world.
At The London Distillery Company, we’ve long believed in the potential of English whisky. And with The Golden Union, we’re proud to celebrate that belief by launching an ongoing series that puts English malt whisky — in all its diversity — centre stage.
For decades, drinkers have largely looked to the whisky powerhouses of Scotland, Ireland, and Japan for whiskies which express the elegance and exploration that it is possible to achieve through the art of blending. But recently, England has confidently joined that conversation.
There are now over 50 licensed distilleries producing whisky across the country, each contributing their own textures, techniques, and philosophies to the production of malt whisky. What sets English whisky apart is precisely this freedom: the absence of rigid expectations.
You’ll find English distilleries aging spirit in unusual cask types, playing with fermentation times, and drawing on local barley and yeast strains to develop unique profiles. It is this developing breadth and diversity that makes The Golden Union both possible, but also timely.
The London Distillery Company’s core mission is to restore the legacy of a trailblazing craft distillery. But alongside that we retain the innate pioneering approach and inquisitive nature of our forebears.
The Golden Union reflects that progressive mindset by bringing together the best of English malt whisky in small-batch releases crafted to contrast cohesion with complexity and character.
At The London Distillery Company, our Whisky Maker’s approach to blending is guided by three principles:
The inaugural release from The Golden Union brings together malt whisky from two pioneering producers: Adnams Distillery in Suffolk, known for their cereal-forward spirits, and The London Distillery Company, whose rich, layered malts reflect both historical craft and urban innovation.
Matured in a combination of hogsheads and barrels, ‘Release No.1 – A Field in England’ is a vibrant and expressive dram — one that honours the character of its components whilst creating something entirely new.
Future releases from The Golden Union will continue to push boundaries — experimenting with different stylistic and regional combinations.
Our goal is to showcase the quality and distinctiveness of modern English whisky whilst thoughtfully combining diverse spirit styles to create new, captivating harmonies.
We’ll also be offering behind-the-scenes looks at our blending processes and offering insightful interviews with partner producers.
